Effects of non-linguistic factors on English-medium instruction in medical education

摘要: 为了探讨医学全英教学效果和教师自身非语言条件之间的关系,通过问卷调查、焦点访谈和课堂观察收集数据,采用多重线性回归分析、建模方法和文本分析法处理数据。结果显示,教学效果与教师全英教龄(rs=0.393,P=0.001)、国外工作和学习背景(rs=0.318,P=0.008)正相关,全英教龄(OR=2.68,95%CI:1.13~6.34,P=0.025)和国外工作和学习背景(OR=12.53,95%CI:1.17~134.52,P=0.037)是影响教学效果的独立因素。

Abstract: This case study investigated the influence of teacher-relevant factors on the effectiveness of English-medium instruction (EMI) at Shantou University Medical College. Data were collected from questionnaire survey, focus interviews and classroom observations. The survey data were subject to multi-linear regression analysis and content analysis was conducted for textual data from the interviews and observations. The regression analysis indicated positive correlation between teaching effectiveness and two teacher-relevant factors: EMI experience(rs=0.393, P=0.001) and oversea training/work experience (rs=0.318, P=0.008) and both of them independently affected the EMI teaching effectiveness (OR=2.68, 95%CI:1.13~6.34, P=0.025; OR=12.53, 95%CI:1.17~134.52, P=0.037).
