Analysis of hotspots and trends in undergraduate education of Chinese materia medica and western pharmacy

Abstract: Objective To analyze the research hotspots and trends of undergraduate education in Chinese materia medica and pharmacy in foreign countries from 2000 to 2022. Methods The domestic and foreign papers on undergraduate education in Chinese materia medica and pharmacy published from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2022 on CNKI, Wanfang Data , VIP Database, CMA Medical Journals, and Web of Science Core Collection were retrieved. CiteSpace was used to comparative analyses base situation, keywords with the strongest citation bursts, research keywords. Results The total number of research papers on undergraduate education in Chinese materia medica and pharmacy were both on the rise. The top 5 high-frequency keywords with cumulative frequency were talent cultivation, teaching reform, practical teaching, training mode, innovation ability in Chinese, and pharmacy student, interprofessional education, performance, attitude, medical student in English. The research hotspots that had continued to 2022 were ideological education in Chinese and interprofessional education, medical student, and performance in English. Conclusions The research on undergraduate education in pharmacy abroad focused on cultivating service-oriented talents and the deep integration of this major with other applied basic disciplines. The research on undergraduate education in Chinese materia medica focused on talent cultivation, teaching reform, practical teaching, and ideological education. Undergraduate education in Chinese materia medica can draw on the optimization directions of foreign research, emphasizing the cultivation of service-oriented talents in clinical Chinese medicine, increasing students' interprofessional experiences, strengthening the renewal of teaching contents for knowledge application, and providing possibilities for enhancing students' professional skills and future development potential.
