Research fronts analysis of medical education based on Web of Science (2023)

Abstract: Objective Focusing on the characteristics and fronts of medical education research, aimed at providing references for future medical education reform. Methods Based on the Web of Science database, with medical education as the theme, CiteSpace and HistCite softwares were used for co-citation cluster analysis and characteristic analysis of the included literature. Reference to the statistical analysis method of Essential Science Indicators, the ranking of institutions in the field of medical education research was analyzed, and the combined weighted counting scheme was used to rank the authors with outstanding contributions. Results In 2022, medical education research fronts focuses on seven themes, including the reform of medical teaching model under the influence of COVID-19, entrustable professional activities, educational technology and the anatomy teaching reform, respect for cultural diversity, mental health state, adaptive expertise and professional identity formation. Among the top 1‰ 20 institutions and 112 authors with outstanding contributing, 19 (95%) and 105 (93.8%) are located in the Occident from 2013 to 2022. Conclusions This report reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic has become an important factor in the transformation of medical education in the past year, entrustable professional activities and competency have become important topics in the evaluation and teaching of medical education, and high-impact institutions and authors with outstanding contributing mainly distributed in the Occident in recent ten years.
