Abstract: Graduate medical education system in China is constantly improving. However, there is still a gap to the international standards. International accreditation is regarded as an effective approach to promote homogeneous outcome of medical education. This paper is to introduce the basic information, organization, procedures and standards of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-International (ACGME-I) accreditation in the United States. Combined with the importantance of ACGME-I accreditation,it may facilitate the improvment of competence-oriented graduate medical education and construction of an accreditation system based on the existing problems of post-graduate medical education in China. Finally, the challenges in the certification process are summarized.
