Abstract: Objective To get a preliminary understanding of trainees′ knowledge and needs on palliative care in standardized residency training in general practice. Methods Using a questionnaire survey method,a total of 147 trainees from 8 bases in Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Ningbo and Lishui were investigated by questionnaire to understand their perception of palliative care and demand for palliative care education in May 2022. Descriptive analysis and rank sum test were used to analyze the influencing factors. Results The score of palliative care knowledge of general practice trainees was (39.74±5.71). Among the 147 trainees, 103 trainees (70.0%) indicated the need for palliative care training courses, 100 trainees (68.0%) believed that it was necessary to provide palliative care services in the community, 94(63.9%) and 100(68.0%) trainees believed that general practitioners should be or have the ability to be the main providers of palliative care, respectively. Religious affiliation (Z=-2.56,P=0.010) and the experience of bereavement in the past year (H=6.06,P=0.048) had statistically significant differences in their cognition of palliative care. Conclusions The general practice trainees have insufficient awareness of palliative care, a large demand for palliative care education, and confidence in community palliative care services. It is suggested to integrate palliative care education into standardized residency training of general practice.
