Investigation on the requirements of college geriatric nursing talents and its corresponding educational plan

Abstract: Objective Make a survey across hospitals, community health care center, and nursing homes in Zhejiang Province, on the requirements for college geriatric nursing students number, knowledge structure, course setting, skill and ability, to refine the corresponding educational plan.Methods A questionnaire was carried out with a self-designed “Questionnaire on geriatric nursing talents education” across 40 hospitals, 45 nursing homes, 198 community health care centers.Results There is large requirements on college geriatric nursing talents. College geriatric nursing students should have comparatively all-around knowledge structure; special contents such as long-term nursing should be added. Meanwhile, college geriatric nursing students should grasp seven core skills, including effective communication skill, urgent contingency handling skill, etc. Nearly 2/3 of those polled are inclined to recruit students majoring in geriatric nursing.Conclusions Based on the requirements from hospitals, communities, and nursing homes, medical schools should adjust the educational plan for geriatric nursing, to comply with the trend of an aging society.
