Abstract: Objective To raise suggestions on the reform and development of general education in medical colleges through investigating and analyzing the demands and evaluations of medical students on general education. Methods A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the medical students from grade 2010 to grade 2014 in a university. Results Most medical students thought it is necessary to carry out general education in medical colleges but the current curriculum of general education couldn't meet their needs. Class schedule, not understanding the course content and the limitation on class size were the main confusion when students selected courses. Most students thought that the degree of their participation in general education curriculum is low. Conclusions Medical colleges should optimize the teaching pattern, improve the curriculum information and elective system based on the rich general education resources to meet the needs of medical students in general education.
