Application of English teacher standardized patients in the clinical teaching of overseas student internship in gastrointestinal surgery department

Abstract: Objective To further investigate the effect of English teacher standardized patients on the communication ability of overseas interns during the internship in gastrointestinal surgery department.Methods A total of 60 medical college oversea interns in gastrointestinal surgery department were randomly divided into two groups, English teacher standardized patient group (TSP group n=30) and traditional teaching group (T group n=30). T group students received lectures and teaching ward rounds while TSP group students received lectures and TSP teaching. The scores of clinical skills and theoretical knowledge were compared between TSP group and T group. The questionnaire was sent to students to investigate the students' feeling of TSP teaching and the internship feedback.Results The scores were significantly higher in TSP group than in T group. Most students held the positive attitude for TSP teaching.Conclusions Internship teaching with TSP can improve the teaching quality in gastrointestinal surgery department.
