Implications of the self-determination theory for physician professionalism cultivation

Abstract: Chinese medical industry is facing many challenges, such as explosive developments of medical technology and knowledge, and the strained relationship between physicians and patients. In order to ensure and enhance the quality of healthcare service delivered, it is time to develop the professionalism status of physicians. This paper firstly shows the evolution of the analysis frameworks of professionalism. Then, based on explanations of human being behaviors according to the motivation structure and basic psychological demands proposed by the self-determination theory, recommendations were made for physician professionalism cultivations, in particular the formation of professional identity.
