Abstract: To improve the teaching effectiveness of the advanced mathematics and linear algebra course for graduate students majoring in epidemiology and health statistics, a blended teaching approach combining “exemption test + online self-learning + offline integrative lectures” was designed and implemented. Seventy-eight graduate students major in epidemiology and health statistics at Sun Yat-sen University were included as the subjects for this blended teaching approach. The learning outcomes, effectiveness, course satisfaction, and the course′s contribution to their research projects were assessed through questionnaires and examination results. The results showed that all non-exempt students passed the two in-class tests and the final exam. Additionally, 61 students (88.4%) were satisfied with the offline integrative lectures, and 64 students (92.8%) found the course beneficial for their research. For graduate students specializing in epidemiology and health statistics who have varying levels of mathematical proficiency and limited time, the blended teaching model of “exemption test + online self-learning + offline integrative lectures” has proven effective in helping them grasp the knowledge related to advanced mathematics and linear algebra. This approach has also been well-received by the students.
