Retrospect and prospect of eight-year medical education program in China

Abstract: As a way to cultivate high-level medical talents, eight-year medical education program has attracted much attention. In this paper, the development process of it in China has been reviewed systematically, and divided into five periods. Furthermore, this paper has clarified the current situation and characteristics, and sorted out the external and internal challenges faced. Eight-year medical education program should adhere to elite education and explore diversified admission, standardize the training stage and encourage the specific development with policy space to align with existing policies, establish an organization to improve development together.
