Practice and evaluation of online PBL teaching in oral and maxillofacial oncology

Abstract: Objective To practice and evaluate the outcome of online PBL teaching in oral and maxillofacial oncology. Methods The study was conducted among the undergraduate students in Peking University School of Stomatology.A total of 60 undergraduate students, divided into 8 groups, participated in the online PBL courses of oral and maxillofacial oncology.The courses of oral and maxillofacial oncology were carried out with online PBL teaching model. The students and teachers were required to complete an assessment questionnaire and evaluate the outcome subjectively. Additionally, the outcome was also evaluated in an online examination objectively. Results All the teachers and 60.0% (36 / 60) of the students agreed with the online PBL teaching method,76.7% (46 / 60) of the students and 62.5% (5 / 8) of the teachers thought that the online PBL teaching method could achieve the same effect as the traditional offline PBL teaching method. The average score of the whole class was 92.83. Conclusions The online PBL teaching is a reliable and effective model which is worthy of promotion.
