Abstract: Objective To explore the effect of narrative medical education on the cultivation of empathy and communication ability of otolaryngology residents. Methods Twenty-seven trainees from otolaryngological department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University from May to August 2022 were selected to receive clinical teaching of narrative medicine. Theoretical study includes 7 aspects such as parallel medical record writing methods, and practical application includes 3 aspects such as clinical diagnosis and treatment and parallel medical record writing.Jefferson empathy scale and doctor-patient communication behavior scale were used to assess the trainees before and after learning, respectively. χ2test was used to compare the difference of indexes before and after teaching. Results Before and after the learning in narrative medicine, the scores of Jefferson empathy scale were (104.5±3.1) and (116.5±5.4), and the scores of doctor-patient communication behavior scale were (136.6±5.5) and (152.0±5.5), respectively. The differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). Conclusions Learning in narrative medicine can effectively improve the empathy and communication ability of otolaryngology residents, which serves to improve their humanistic quality and establish harmonious doctor-patient relationship.
