Basic medical education WFME global standards for quality improvement (the 2015 revision)

Abstract: The Basic Medical Education WFME Global Standards for Quality Improvement was published in 2003 by WFME which has a positive impact on the establishment of the accreditation system of the global medical education and the assurance of the quality of medical education in different countries and areas. The first revision of the WFME global standards was initiated in 2012 and formally published in 2013. The 2012 edition of WFME global standards was updated and revised again by WFME in 2015, and the 2015 edition comprises foremost the introduction and sections of annotations to the standards, whereas the standards themselves have only undergone limited changes. The set of the 2015 revision of WFME global standards are structured according to 9 areas including mission and outcomes, educational programme, assessment of students, students, academic staff/faculty, educational resources, programme evaluation, governance and administration. The standards are specified using two levels of attainment-- basic standard and standard for quality development, acknowledge regional and national differences in the educational programme, respect the specific profile and status of development of different medical schools, and strive for continuous development. WFME global standards helps the establishment of standards of each country or region.
