Abstract: Objective To investigate the cognitive status of clinical medical students and nursing students for patient safety and analyze the difference between them, and to supply reference for the patient safety education. Methods Using convenience sampling method, 533 students in Tianjin and Shijiazhuang were investigated by a self-designed questionnaire. Results The patient safety cognitive total score was (3.29±0.50), the scores of three dimensions from high to low were attitude (3.67±0.56), behavior and practice (3.37±0.60), knowledge (2.93±0.77). The overall cognition and three dimensions score of the clinical medical students were all lower than those of the nursing students, they all showed statistical difference (all P <0.01). The overall score of the clinical medical students was (3.09±0.52), and the scores of three dimensions were (2.63±0.81), (3.53±0.57) and (3.26±0.62). The overall score of the nursing students was (3.41±0.45), and the scores of three dimensions were (3.12±0.67), (3.76±0.52) and (3.45±0.57).Conclusions There was a great difference between the clinical medical students and nursing students for patient safety cognition, especially in the knowledge, behavior and practice. The medical school and teaching hospital should strengthen the patient safety education, and explore the inter-professional education for improving the cognition of the medical students.
