Abstract: Objective To explore the current status, problems and countermeasures of academic competence cultivation among professional degree postgraduate students under the synergy of health care system and medical educational system. Methods Questionnaire surveys were carried out among 225 professional degree postgraduate students combined with standardized resident training program in 3 hospitals, Shanghai. Results There were 89.3% (201/225) participants who agreed with the importance of clinical research for professional degree postgraduate students but only 22.2% (50/225) of them believed the effectiveness of training. The most important influential factors were as follows: time conflict between clinical work and research study [92.4% (208/225)], lack of systematic training curriculum [80.4% (181/225)] and resource [51.1% (115/225)]for clinical trials. Suggestions from students included the feasible schedule for full-time research [81.8% (184/225)], supervisor-guided training [81.8% (184/225)]and training program of clinical research [73.8% (166/225)]. Conclusions Postgraduate students' academic competence decreased in the synergy of health care system and medical educational system. Medical schools and training hospitals should remodel the current system based on an agreement on requirements and to optimize the model and guarantee the quality.
