Objective To investigate the current status and demand of continuing medical educations (CME)in geriatrics in long-term care among the health staffs working for the elderly.Methods A cross-sectional investigation was done among all the participants attending the Peking Union and Orpea Geriatric Training Course held in 2016 and in 2017. A structured questionnaire was distributed before the course to explore the information of learning track and content of geriatric education in the past, and the favorite training modality & attractive content in the future; a second questionnaire was distributed to investigate the training effect after the class.Results We found that 44.3% of the respondents did not attend any continuing medical education in geriatrics, and only a few of them(19.8%～34.5%) had the CME on the elementary content of geriatrics such as comprehensive geriatric assessment, geriatric syndromes, chronic disease and elderly care. The short-term training course was the favorite modality of CME(59.4%). As to the content of CME, nearly all the lectures on geriatrics were found to be able to promote the clinical practice rated by most of the trainees.Conclusions The conditions of geriatric knowledge held by the health staffs for the elderly are grim at present. The continuing medical educations in Geriatrics are in great need, and should be promoted and combined with the qualification and certification of all personnel involved with geriatric services.
